This is a new solution for temperature, humidity and barometric pressure monitoring on your NMEA 2000 system and MFD using Digital Yacht’s NavLINK Blue interface

Ruuvi Tag is a wireless, Bluetooth temperature, humidity and  barometric pressure sensor which wirelessly connects to the  NAVLink Blue interface to display these important parameters on your multi function display.  Most modern MFDs from brands such as Garmin, Raymarine, Navico and more can display this information.

NAVLink Blue supports up to 4 sensors so you can monitor multiple areas around the boat.

Ruuvi sensors continuously broadcast sensor data at 0.8 Hz and simultaneously log environmental sensor data at a 5 minute interval for 10 days, storing data internally so you can view histograms of historical data and trends via the Ruuvi Bluetooth app (for iOS & Android).

Choose between RuuviTag Pro or RuuviTag Standard. The RuuviTag Pro is a more rugged version of the RuuviTag Standard. Both share the same circuit board design and operating principle. The RuuviTag Pro features a more accurate temperature sensor, a more durable enclosure, improved mounting options, and a wider operating temperature range battery.

CONFIGURATION

You can configure the NavLink Blue through its own simple web interface.

In BlueTooth mode, NavLink Blue will automatically scan for nearby Ruuvi sensors for 30 seconds. To differentiate sensors, place the desired sensor close to the NavLink Blue during BlueTooth mode scanning.

Switch to WiFi mode, just open your web browser, enter the NavLink Blue’s IP address, and you can now add and configure sensors (Sea Temperature, Outside Temperature).

To switch from Bluetooth to Wi-Fi mode, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the reset button for 5 seconds.
  2. The LEDs will light up in sequence.
  3. When all 5 LEDs are illuminated, release the button.
Once in Wi-Fi mode, the NavLink Blue is ready for configuration through the web interface.

An internal 1000mAH coin cell (CR2477) provides for approximately 1-2 years of normal operation and can easily be changed by the user.  NavLINK Blue is self powered from the NMEA 2000 bus so the whole system fits in minutes.

Ruuvi Tag is available in two versions – Standard & Pro.  The sensors are identical and waterproof to IPX7 but the Pro version has a ruggedised enclosure with screw tags for mounting.

Notes on barometric pressure for marine weather monitoring

Digital barometers like the Ruuvi contain electronic sensors for pressure readings. Barometers measure the weight of air above them. High pressure generally indicates clear weather, while low pressure suggests storms or rain. The pressure reading changes help predict weather patterns before visible signs appear.

Rising pressure indicates improving weather. Falling pressure suggests deteriorating conditions. Quick pressure drops signal strong weather changes. Slow changes mean gradual weather shifts.  Changing pressure can effect tidal heights too so can be important for shallow water navigation.

A change of 0.2 inHg (6.8 mb) within a three hour period generally indicates significant weather changes. Larger changes suggest more severe weather patterns.  Barometers provide good forecasting over short 24-48 hr time periods.
